This post is part of Onam and Sadya. The recipe below will make enough to serve 6 - 8 people for a Sadya. Measurements are only approximate.
Parippu Curry is made with mung bean lentils and is served as the first course of a sadya with clarified butter/ ghee. For a normal lunch, this is usually prepared with ground coconut paste which makes it a rich side-dish.
Sometimes other vegetables like spinach, chokos and drumsticks are also added to the lentils. But for Onam, since we have a rich meal to enjoy, parippu curry is made in all its simplicity. I follow this recipe only for Onam and hence call it 'Onam Parippu Curry'.
Ingredients
1. Wash dal in water. Put it in a pressure cooker and pour water till it just covers the lentils. Add all the other ingredients and pressure cook for 2 whistles. Mash dal. Add more water as required and season to taste.
Serve hot with rice. Pour melted clarified butter over it and enjoy with pappadam.

Kerala rice(big, red) makes it all the more tastier along with Dal.
